When the iPhone and App Store was new, the iPhone GPS apps available at that time felt somewhat bulky and expensive. Now I used Google Maps during our vacation in Norway, Sweden and I think its fantastic. Especially the turn by turn navigation directions.
Just a simple thing as having up to date maps is essential. Compared to the stupid built-in GPS in my car I dont have to pay $100 every year to get the maps up to date. When I have the phone with me, the maps get updated much faster and roads often change.
The visual feedback is nice, if a road is under construction the colour change to orange-ish to notify you about that. This is also true about traffic meaning you can find an alternate route based on this data. When you near an intersection or a place you have to make a turn the map automatically zooms in so it is easy to visually see how to drive.
The audio directions sounds natural. The robotic speech I am used to is gone.
If you only have gps coordinates that is no problem. Just open the Google Maps app and in the search box type in the coordinates. Here are examples of formats that works:
- Degrees, minutes, and seconds (DMS): 41°24’12.2″N 2°10’26.5″E
- Degrees and decimal minutes (DMM): 41 24.2028, 2 10.4418
- Decimal degrees (DD): 41.40338, 2.17403
If you create a route you can pre-download the route on wi-fi so you dont have to do that during the actual trip. Saving you potential roaming charges when you are travelling.
It is also possible to use the built-in Apple Maps, and you have a huge selection of iphone gps apps if you search for it in the App Store. For me though, Google Maps is good enough and provide the features I need and want. Simple and effective.
Then it is just a matter of getting a fine car mount for your phone, cigarette adapter usb charger and go on vacation with Google Maps! 🙂
